Service Review – Electrolysis

One service that I feel doesn’t get enough attention or enough credit is Electrolysis. Now to put it simply Electrolysis is a form of hair removal. It is the only form of hair removal that is 100% permanent; now when I say it’s 100% permanent it means that Electrolysis can treat any hair type, any hair colour, and virtually anywhere on the body. Now you may think ‘Oh my gosh, this is great! Why would I ever do laser if electrolysis is 100% effective?’ Here comes the kicker, with Electrolysis. The hair is treated one at a time and yes, the hair has to be visible in order for it to be treated so it’s not the most ideal treatment if you’re starting your hair removal journey.

What’s great about Electrolysis is that it can treat very fine thin hairs, white hairs, gray hairs and hairs in areas that the laser simply cannot get to; for example, close to the eyebrows, lining up a facial beard line for men. Electrolysis definitely does have its benefits Now when it comes to hair removal, Electrolysis and laser do go hand-in-hand. The hair cycle is the same for both. There are three stages to the hair cycle, the growing stage, the resting stage and the shedding stage; any form of hair removal, whether it’s laser or electrolysis, the hair can only be killed and destroyed during the growing stage. This is why multiple treatments are needed because not all the hair is at the same stage at the same time. It’s not to say that the hairs are not going to be treated at all if they’re not in the growing stage, hairs that are in the shedding and resting stage tend to grow back lighter and thinner, which is always a win.

I would say in my experience, the biggest downside to Electrolysis is that it is a tedious process. It does take a long time to treat the hairs and for them to go away completely, which is why I always always recommend to my clients if we can to do laser first for as many sessions as it takes and have Electrolysis finish up the rest.

How does Electrolysis work? What Electrolysis is that it takes a very fine needle, it’s charged with electricity, the needle then gets inserted into the shaft and hits the bulb of the hair follicle, energy and electricity is then admitted (killing the follicle) the needle gets pulled out, and the hair gets pulled out as well. You do have some little satisfaction knowing that the hair will be gone at the end of the treatment, but we would find out in a couple weeks if it actually comes back or not. The side effects of Electrolysis is that the skin is usually pretty sensitive after the treatment, there can be redness afterwards, but all that can be resolved with a little bit of healing cream as well as some ice.

Normally, I don’t use any numbing agents for any of my clients when it comes to Electrolysis because it is pretty painless. The only feeling that my clients tend to feel is when I’m actually taking the hair out not the actual insertion of the needle. I personally enjoy performing Electrolysis because there is a satisfaction of being able to just tweeze out every single hair that I get to attack. Most of my clients do come in for light hair white hairs the odd couple hairs after we’re done with our laser treatments, but also it can be used for aesthetic reasons too. I do also have some clients that come in and we shaped their brows. We can create fine lines with facial hair than this is especially important for men because it helps define the shape that they want and that’s pretty awesome. At the end of the day, Electrolysis is a great treatment for hair removal. I believe everybody is a candidate at a certain point in time in their hair removal journey if this is something that you’re looking to get into, please feel free to reach out I’d be happy to talk about it more also consultations are free and we can definitely do a patch test.
