Spooky Season – Skin Care Edition

We are officially in Spooky Season!

I love Halloween, I love seeing how people get so creative with crafts, costumes and makeup. Being in the skin care and beauty industry, it can be challenging to fully immerse in the season. All I can offer is pumpkins in skin care and scary skin care habits. In going with the theme, I am going to share with you a medical aesthetician’s interpretation of spooky season!

Why I Love Pumpkins!

I love October, even though it’s not my birthday month, it’s a close second. The colours of Autumn, the scents of apples and cinnamon, sweater weather and of course … Pumpkins! Now I enjoy the occasional pumpkin spice latte just as much as the next person but my love for pumpkins goes beyond food and drink. Not many people know, pumpkins have great benefits in skin care. My clients know that I speak of pumpkin frequently because of its active ingredients and the results of it are amazing.

Benefits of Pumpkins In Professional Skin Treatments

  • Reduces Pigmentation
  • Fights Acne Breakouts
  • Increases Cell Turnover
  • Gentle & Powerful Exfoliant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces Fine Lines & Wrinkles
  • Smoothens Out Textured Skin
  • Hydrates & Plumps The Skin

Did You Know?

That pumpkin has the highest content of naturally occurring vitamin A (which helps minimize acne scars), salicylic acid (helps to reduce acne), and beta carotene (helps decrease wrinkles & dark spots).

Have I converted you into a pumpkin lover? (The correct answer is: Yes!)

Let’s Talk About Skin Care Scaries

There are a number of things that you should never do in skin care, actually there’s a long list but let’s focus on the big ones.

Skin Care Scary One – Purchasing Chemical Peels Online

This is a really scary one, things that you can buy online are not regulated or tested thoroughly so you never know what percentages of acids are in them and what it can do to your skin. Some acids in high levels can cause serious damage to the skin, chemical burns are a real thing and if you don’t know what’s in a peel, it’s probably not good for your skin.

Skin Care Scary Two – Going To Bed Without Removing Your Makeup And/Or Double Cleansing

This is scary too, when we are out and about during the day, the environment clings to our skin. It is so important to cleanse the day off our skin; not cleansing and even double cleansing can clog the pores, dirty pillow cases, and cause breakouts. Do yourself a favour and always, always cleanse your skin at the end of the day; your future skin will thank you for it.

Skin Care Scary Three – Using Skin Care Tools Improperly Or Not Intended For Your Skin

As a Skin Care Specialist, this one is in my top five of skin care scaries. Skin care tools are great, I use them in professional treatments for my clients and I use them for myself. There are tools that can cause serious damage to the skin if not used properly. One example that comes to mind is the rotating brush some people use while cleansing. The problem with this particular skin care tool is that if the skin is sensitive, prone to breakouts and/or dehydrated a rotating brush can make the skin worse and cause more breakout and can overstimulate the skin which causes skin imperfections. Another skin care product that I always tell clients not to get for home use is the ultrasonic skin scrubber. Don’t get me wrong, this is a wonderful tool and I use it almost every time I have a skin treatment for a client. The problem arises when someone has this in their hands and does not know how to use it properly can cause scarring to the skin and with a lot of pressure can cause broken capillaries. Always ask your Aestie Bestie (Me) before making a skin care tool purchase.

Skin Care Scary Four – Not Wearing SPF Daily

This is the scariest thing you can say to a skin care specialist. SPF is essential in skin care, it’s the final step in your morning routine and protects your skin. Here is a quick rundown of what SPF can treat, maintain and protect: it helps reduce pigmentation, its an anti-aging agent, it protects the skin from the sun and free radicals and seals in skin care products. I know that finding the right SPF can be hard and many of my clients say the biggest reason why they don’t wear SPF is because they don’t like it, it feels heavy or it leaves a white cast on the skin. This is where I come in and I can help you find the perfect SPF for you. If I can find one for myself I can definitely find one for you. There is no excuse for not wearing SPF – SPF is non-negotiable in skin care.
